Cupijó: Creator and most enthusiastic about the new Siriá

The literal meaning of the word mestre, according to Portuguese, is an instructor, educator, leader, guide and craftsman. For folk rhythms and popular as Siriá, music that arose through the blacks and Indians from Cameta in northeastern Pará, master has something more than these meanings. It is the composer, musician, singer and above all, the publisher of a rhythm that survives the centuries lavishing love and joy to our roots.

In Siriá, who holds the top post is an advocate of quiet and modest way, Joaquim Maria Dias de Castro, 74, or to be exact Mestre Cupijó, considered the re-inventor of Siriá is responsible for making it known world and Brazil apart.Far from the spotlight as an artist responsible for such achievements could enjoy, the master still lives in the quiet Cupijó Cameta and is the huge backyard Tocantins River, which inspired the creation of so many musical works. Before diving in some of the history of this artist, you need to clarify that Cupijó Cameta is a region and is related to the origins of our character.

Speaking of home, he started in the music for 12 years, at the hands of his father, Vicente Serrão de Castro Filho, who was also a musician. A year later, the boy was playing clarinet in the “Jazz Batuta do Ritmo” and then in the Centennial Banda Euterpe, founded in 1874, of which his father was mestre and conductor. Moreover, the connection of Cupijó with the band would continue for longer. When his father died in 1961, the couple joined other musicians to leave the band no end. Thereafter, they were doomed to success.

From the 1970's, recorded six LPs and a CD followed by the Continental labels, Scorpio and Chanticleer, with the flagship folk music such as Samba cametaenses Damn, the Banguê and, of course, Siriá. The first vinyl was recorded at the headquarters “Império de Samba Favela” in 1973, right there at Cameta. With a new look given to the ancestral rhythm Siriá makes it faster and therefore more audible to the ears of the world, master Cupijó won success. Their music broke out inside and outside the country. He turned to movies and theme music has been covered by popular international singers at the time, as the Portuguese Roberto Leal, which led to the world the song "Siriá" with choreography performed in traditional costumes of Portugal. Mix it very interesting to Siriá, whose name is derived from the word crab, influenced by the accent of the shifting cultivators and slaves of the Lower Tocantins, and whose dance has changes similar to those of the Carimbó, but with a more seasoned with sensuality.

"The music cametaense is marked before and after master Cupijó. He made the reading of rhythms such as Siriá, which was once played in a rudimentary way. Cupijó gave him more musicality to the incorporation of other wind instruments and strings." said Manuel Valente, historian and author of  "Drums - rhythms and rituals of the Amazon Tocantínia" (2010).

Besides the musical activity, master Cupijó worked in other areas. He was professor of adult literacy, general counsel and a councilor Cameta at the height of his career. And yet, in the ranges of these performances, was one of the creators of  “Festival de Músicas Carnavalescas de Compositores Cametaenses” and gave his footsteps in the carnival of Cameta, one of the most traditional of Para, as president of the Embaixada de Samba Não Posso Me Amofiná.

Siriá is a Brazilian dance that originated in the municipality of Cametá. It is considered an expression of love, seduction and gratitude to the indigenous people and African slaves due to an incident. To them it is something supernatural and miraculous. Its name comes from the siri (small crab), influenced by the accent of the hinterland mestizos and slaves from the region. The elements used are the same as in the carimbó dance, yet with more varied and greater evolutions.

The siriá is a graceful folkloric dance from the state of Pará in the Amazon. It's danced by couples to the sounds of a flute, guitar, etc. and the strong percussion of large drums made of hollow tree trunks with both ends covered with leather. Men and women dance together and alternate on the dance floor. The siriá originated in the fishing communities along the river, as a sort of "courtship" dance. These populations, called "caboclos," are the biological and cultural result of mixed European, Indian, and African origins.

"If you don't jump up and start dancing and are in good mood for the rest of the day or whenever you listen to the Siriá there is something seriously wrong with you"
